"Minds are not read, although Fobbles use the term interchangeably to this day, we mutants know better. The mind is not a book, and in any case the mind is heard, not read. Not just anyone can do it, for the mind is a complex organ. Or at least most minds are... It is true, however, that those who have mastered mind control are able, under certain conditions, to delve into the minds of their victims and to interpret their findings correctly, in turn letting them be controlled. Do not use this ability in the open, though, since it also happens to be illegal."
Annabeth Black regarding how mind control differs from telepathy[src]

Psionics is a term used to refer to the power to use mental and psychic powers. Users can use various forms of psychic abilities and powers, including telekinesis, telepathy, teleportation, precognition, and the like. These abilities are considered supernatural phenomena related to psychological attributes of consciousness, such as the mental, emotional and (possibly) spiritual. Telepathy is the act of navigating through the many layers of a person's mind and correctly interpreting one's findings. A person who practices this art is known as a telepath. Fobbles might call this "mind-reading," but practitioners disdain the term as naive. Telepathy can be countered by mind resistance, which may be used to shield one's mind from the invasion of a telepath.

Description[]

"It was the most wonderful feeling. Lindsay felt a floating sensation as every thought and worry in her head was wiped gently away, leaving nothing but a vague, untraceable happiness. She stood there feeling extremely relaxed, only dimly aware of everyone watching her."
Lindsay Kellerman while under mind control[src]

Annabeth Black was a talented telepath who would frequently read those around her and verbally respond to those thoughts. She did so without malicious intent but was often scolded for looking into others' minds without their permission. Whereas most had to learn telepathy, Annabeth was born with a great aptitude for the skill.

"You are all here because of the validity of your forms on which your passionate requests have been written, read, and chosen. […] Mind control can be fought, and I’ll be teaching you how, but it takes real strength of character, and not everyone can master it. It would be best to avoid being hit with it…"
―Sheriff Bladepoint to his pupils[src]

Resisting psionic masters such as telepaths is possible, but requires great strength of will and character. Baby Intelligence, George Thames II and Whammo Fireball each learned to resist mental invasion after being subjected to their effects, though the latter two took quite a long time before building the said resistance.[1][2][3]

Psionic methods[]

"When I'm thinking something, no one else can hear my thoughts except for me. Are you saying the Dark Lord is different? He can actually... hear my thoughts?"
"Hear them, control them, unhinge them. In the past it was often the Dark Lord's pleasure to invade the minds of his victims, creating visions designed to torture them into utter derangement. Only after extracting the last exquisite ounce of agony, only when he had them literally begging for the sweet release of death... only then would he finally snuff out their life force."
"I'm very, very confused.
"
Annabeth Black explains Mr. Stupid NoHead's abilities of mind control to Baby Intelligence[src]

If a target is not skilled in Mind resistance, a telepath will be able to detect if the person is lying, as well as delve into their thoughts, emotions, and memories. Highly skilled telepaths can also influence a mind that they invade; for example, Hell Burnbottom temporarily possessed Lindsay Kellerman (which was extremely painful to Kellerman, to the point where she begged Master Intelligence to kill her, just to relieve her of the pain).[3] The Gladiator, considered perhaps the most skilled telepath of his time, was able to send Kellerman incredibly realistic visions of Transylvania Quarters and the Grand Nuke.[4] It is easier to perform mind control when the target and practitioners' eyes meet.[3]

"I told you to empty yourself of emotion!!"
―Annabeth Black on the difficulty of learning mind resistance[src]

The most basic form of mind resistance, judging from Annabeth Black's early lessons on the subject to Bartholomew Gales, involves clearing one's mind — making it "blank and empty" — in order to prevent a telepath from perceiving one's emotions and thoughts. More advanced mind resistance involves suppressing only the thoughts, emotions, and memories that would contradict whatever it is an Shielder wishes a telepath to believe; hence, it is not obvious that mind resistance is being used even if the person is lying. It requires a great deal of willpower, as with resisting telekinesis, as well as a high degree of mental and emotional discipline. It is also one method of resisting the influence of Turan.[5]

Controversy[]

Mind-reading
"Your mind, to me, is an open book: full of big print and lots of pictures!"
"Are you
asking to be punched senseless?"
―Sword of Mascuilinity shaman and Annabeth Black[src]

Mind-reading is the ability to perceive the thoughts or feelings of others through extrasensory means. According to Annabeth Black, this term is used only by Fobbles and is a notably inaccurate description of mind control[7] (as there are far broader possibilities for this ability). Nonetheless, the art of mind control can achieve mind-reading, as could the mental connection that was shared by Baby Intelligence and his enemies.

Limitations[]

Sometimes overuse of psychic abilities can lead to serious drawbacks such as severe headaches or even brain damage. Users of Vertigo can cause serious damage to psychics. Some users are likely to lose control over their abilities if they are poorly trained.
